Exemplars of Evil Released
18 September 2007
0

It appears that I will have worked on one of the last 3.5 edition books to see print before 4th edition redefines Dungeons & Dragons. The Exemplars of Evil supplement features nine ready to play villains, the ambitions that motivate them, and the henchmen who execute their will. When I initially signed on, all the archetypes had already been chosen by in-house designers, but I still had my pick of which chapter to write. The fire giant queen attracted me right away. I knew she had to be a wu jen.

You can read more about
Exemplars of Evil either by clicking here or on the cover image. As well, Valbryn Morlydd, the fire giant wu jen queen that I ultimately created, has been featured in an excerpt on the Wizards of the Coast web site.

Goblinoid Triumvirate
04 June 2007
0

Thanks to the enduring efforts of Sérgio Teixeira da Silva, the goblin paragon and hobgoblin paragon, along with the existing bugbear paragon, now comprise a trio of monstrous scions, each with their own unique role in goblinoid society. The goblin paragon is a self-serving opportunist, employing underhanded tactics. The hobgoblin paragon stands beside their brothers in arms, coordinating offensive strength.

All of these goblinoids are detailed in the races section, either as Level Adjustment +0 races or as a racial class.

Prestigious Haste
28 March 2007
0

Are you the kind of person who actively seeks out adventure? Does your patience dry up while other people formulate a plan? Have you already skipped over this sentence to read the next one? Well now there is a prestige class for you! Paradoxically, the swiftblade was a late-coming idea intended for publication in Complete Mage, but missed the deadline. Rather than deprive readers of this prestige class, however, Wizards of the Coast has seen fit to publish the swiftblade as a web enhancement. Let it be know that this prestige class would not have been possible without Brian Moran, who originally came to me with the idea.

Dead Levels Revisited
27 February 2007
0

A full season after my first "Dead Levels" article was published, sparking a flurry of feedback both for and against those ideas, I have dared to indulge the concept again, albeit with a substantial introduction this time. I take on the alternative core classes (archivist, beguiler, duskblade, and so on) in this article, attempting to offer thematic special abilities that fill the levels in which none are received. The "Dead Levels II" article also invites dungeon masters (or players for that matter) to adopt the material as printed or come up with their own dead level abilities. As usual, I'm always curious to know what other people are thinking.

Dead Levels Retasked
13 October 2006
0

For anybody familiar with this web site, you are well aware of how I almost pathologically rewrite Dungeons & Dragons rules. Having somehow convinced Wizards of the Coast that I can be counted on, I am finally in a strategic position to introduce my ideas through backdoor internet channels. Okay, I'm no modern day doppelganger field agent; perhaps a long term 4th edition mole? You can read my latest attempt at revisionist espionage in an article called "Dead Levels" that grants special abilities (with an imperceptible impact on game balance) during every level in which the printed core character classes gain none.

Complete Mage Arrival
10 October 2006
0

Working on Complete Mage was a whirlwind for me. I was brought on board late into development and asked to write the first chapter as if a haste spell had been cast on my brain. Let me tell you, nothing promotes inventiveness like an inflexible deadline. This book has come with a pleasant surprise. After Gwendolyn Kestrel read my turnover, she recommended that I be promoted from "additional material" to "designer with cover credit", which seems to have taken effect. Thanks Gwendolyn!

The chapter I helped develop is typically the one that gamers flip through on their way to more crunchy material. If you like flavor text, tell me what you think. You can read more about
Complete Mage either by clicking here or on the cover image.

When Underbites Ruled the World
09 September 2006
0
A giant, three goblinoids, an orc, and an irrepressible reptilian have found their way onto the web site in one fell swoop. The statistics and racial classes (where appropriate) for ogres, goblins, hobgoblins, hobgoblin chargers, orcs, and kobolds are now featured as alternative races, for when, you know, players you feel like doing good deeds.

The Unwavering Path
25 August 2006
0

Earlier last month, the Wizards of the Coast web site hosted the multiclassing quest that I wrote for monks and paladins. This month, that multiclassing quest, "The Unwavering Path", has been beautifully edited and typeset to appear like a published book, but in PDF format. Seeing my name all by itself next to a "Design" credit is kind of a thrill. I love working with other people in a collaborative effort, but it also feels good to foster something on my own as well.

You can download the new version of "The Unwavering Path" by clicking here.

Lizardfolk Among the Counted
18 August 2006
0

I held off posting the lizardfolk racial class until the Monster Manual IV was released, which I knew would contain a new entry for the lizardfolk. Since nobody deemed to include a racial class there, I feel that it is my solemn duty to include those levels here. The lizardfolk racial class and the lizardfolk paragon are now hosted under one roof, as well they should be.

In formatting this racial class, I also updated all the other racial classes (in keeping with current standards).

Multiclassing for One and All
18 July 2006
0

I pitched an article to Wizards of the Coast a few months ago about exchanging feats. Turns out I was thinking too small. The Player's Handbook II, soon to be released at that point, had me beat. After reading that book, I was ensnared by the chapter on rebuild quests and consequently pitched a new article. The result of that proposal grew into my latest web enhancement entitled "Multiclassing Quest: Monks and Paladins". While successfully completing this quest does not allow you to rebuild your character, it does let monks and paladins bend one of their more "strict" rules. This quest marks my first published adventure.

The Fight Against Rust
17 July 2006
0

If you feel helpless going up against a rust dragon or rust monster, fearful of losing your greatsword and platemail to their insatiable appetites for metal, blame your own lack of foresight.

The forward thinking adventurer can now protect their equipment from these corrosive nuisances by coating their metal possessions with an alchemical substance called rustguard. For a more permanent solution, characters can also augment their magic armor, shields, or weapons with a new special quality known as rust immunity.

Monster Manual IV Hits the Stands
11 July 2006
0

My contribution to Monster Manual IV, although small, was nonetheless present in this multi-authored book. I managed to sneak in there with the nagatha (pain-driven monstrous humanoids that serve their spirit naga masters) and the varag (slow-witted goblinoids that commingle dire wolves and hobgoblins), the latter of which is beautifully rendered by Steve Prescott.

This book was an experiment for Wizards of the Coast, as the artwork was solicited first and the writing second, allowing writers to create abilities that are directly consistent with the image. You can read more about Monster Manual IV either by clicking here or on the cover image.

Taking the Burden Off Wizards
26 May 2006
0

I just returned from a three week European vacation to find that my most recent Wizards of the Coast web enhancement, "Magic Items: Transferring XP Costs", has been freshly uploaded. It appears that Research and Development barely changed a word. I guess scouring through the rule books for every exploitable mechanic was time well spent.

I am a big promoter of player-designed magic items. These rules will make it easier for the poor wizards who typically pay the XP costs for such creations.

Kobold Fever Like Never Before
20 April 2006
0

If you thought I played favorites with kobolds before, my new web enhancment at Wizard of the Coast, entitled "Kobolds: Playing to Their Strengths", confirms it. You will find variant kobold racial traits, weapons, a domain, a ritual, and a feat therein.

I consider writing articles like this my steadfast duty as an all-watcher of kobold civilization, fueling the prestige and vitality of their labyrinth communities until they control and dominate every campaign setting in which they exist. Indeed, it is a good time to be a Small reptilian humanoid.

Move Over Flying Monkeys...
06 April 2006

Excuse my giddy fan-boy tone ... but I inspired a figurine! I didn't even know this figurine was in production until checking out the Preview for April and Beyond today.

Scroll down to July and there it is, my baby, a dragonwrought kobold, slated for the War of the Dragon Queen miniatures expansion pack.

I'll say it now, you best start playing nice with kobolds because they are primed and ready to take over the world -- one ditherbomb at a time.

Ten Kobold Traps and a Paragon
27 January 2006
0

I admit it. I held out posting these articles at the Waking Lands hoping that Wizards of the Coast would feature them (for that added touch of credibility). This web enhancement, entitled "Kobolds: Of Traps and Perfection", features ten kobold traps and a paragon that were cut from Races of the Dragon because of size constraints.

A special thanks goes out to my friend "Jason H. Haley", a United States soldier whose ideas were crucial in helping me design the ten kobold traps. I hope your copy of Races of the Dragon shows up in the mail soon buddy!

Races of the Dragon Excerpt
07 January 2006
0
No more than one day later, Wizards of the Coast has posted a significant excerpt from Races of the Dragon. I created the "disciple of the eye" prestige class and everything kobold-oriented. Feel free to ask me any questions on the message boards. I'll answer what I can before the release date (17 January 2006).

Races of the Dragon Art Gallery
06 January 2006
0
For those of you who are interested in a few "artistic" spoilers, Wizards of the Coast is now hosting the art gallery for Races of the Dragon. Below are my six favorite images. How can you tell which portion of the book I wrote? Believe me, kobolds would be a core race if I had my way.

0
The above artwork is drawn by (from left to right) Carl Frank, Jim Nelson, Chris Malidore, Steve Prescott, Steven Belledin, and Carl Frank (again). And yes, that would be a winged dragonwrought kobold with blue dragon heritage to the far right. I have to say, Carl Frank really "gets" kobolds.

Races of the Dragon Prescott Style
06 December 2005
0

The first artwork for Races of the Dragon has surfaced and Steve Prescott did the cover honors (placing a kobold right up front no less). Of course, the little bugger wouldn't be so bold if there wasn't a dragon at his back. Races of the Dragon was a pilgrimage of writing for me, proving to myself that I could handle a diverse subject within a set deadline. Make no mistake, I called Gwendolyn Kestrel a few times during the editing stages to make corrections, testing her boundless patience, I'm sure. (I even started worshipping Kurtulmak a little bit to get my way.)

You can read more about Races of the Dragon either by clicking here or on the cover image. The Waking Lands gets a mention in my biography!

A Sorcerer for All Levels
03 December 2005
0

There have been many revisions of the sorcerer character class over the past couple of years (almost since the class was first printed) that span message boards and web sites the internet wide. The version here presented succeeds in simplicity to capture what it means to be an "innate" spellcaster with "balanced" spell-like abilities.

This version of the sorcerer builds on the existing one hosted by the Waking Lands, so some details will be the same. More importantly, the new changes offer an incentive to keep playing a sorcerer for 20 levels, instead of multiclassing into the first prestige class that grants "+1 level of arcane spellcasting" every level, with special abilities to boot. Those incentives come in the from of thematic spells and reversible spells.

One Catastrophe After Another
30 November 2005

The web site is up and running again, but I'm not about to take my internet presence for granted. I don't want to belabor the daily news with all the sordid details, so let me offer an abridged version on the message boards.

Mercurial Love ... for Weapons
01 November 2005
0
Want more wallop from your weapon? Consider making your favorite damage dealer with the mercurial weapon quality. This game mechanic takes the mercurial greatsword and longsword that were originally printed in Sword and Fist (and subsequently corrected in official errata) and creates rules for applying their qualities to any one-handed or two-handed bludgeoning or slashing weapon made out of metal.

Cleric versus Priest
26 August 2005
0
Much to my surprise, the cleric (previously the one character class that I thought defied revision) has been augmented with four new abilities. A slight improvement has also been made to any domain that grants more than one class skill for clerics. These additions have consequently prompted changes to the priest class as well.

Wizards Catalog Delivers
29 July 2005
0

History does not disappoint. A preview of the Wizards catalog showed up on ENWorld today saying the following about Races of the Dragon...

>>>>>
Races of the Dragon

Gwendolyn F.M. Kestrel, Jennifer Clarke Wilkes, and Kolja Raven Liquette
A new D&D sourcebook detailing races descended from dragons.
Races of the Dragon provides D&D players and Dungeon Masters with an in-depth look at races descended from or related to dragons. In addition to exploring the fan-favorite kobold race, Races of the Dragon introduces two new races, dragonborn and spellscales, and provides information on half-dragons. The dragonborn are a transitive race, an exciting new concept that allows players to transform from their initial race into a new one. The book also includes a wealth of cultural information and new prestige classes, feats, equipment, spells and magic items.
160 page hardcover, $29.95.
<<<<<

I still can't say more than the catalog reveals about Races of the Dragon, but it was my religious quest to take the "cute" out of kobolds. I hope my efforts were not in vain.

The Spawn of Wyrms
27 July 2005
0
There you have it. As the rush of summer gaming releases subsides, Amazon.com breaks the news about Races of the Dragon, my third freelance assignment from Wizards of the Coast. As per usual, I can say little about this project beyond the fact that it is "a book about dragon races". Don't let Gwendolyn Kestrel (my highly motivated project boss) fool you. She may have a proclivity for all things "Fae" and "spritely", but she keeps several bugbears on retainer to make sure that her freelancers behave. If I can be assured by history, the Wizards catalogue will have something to say about Races of the Dragon soon.

Weapons of Legacy Art and Map Gallery
22 July 2005
0

If you haven't already purchased the book, be sure to gander at the art gallery and map gallery of Weapons of Legacy, both of which are now viewable on the Wizard of the Coast web site.

My official list of legacy items includes Bullybasher's Gauntlets, Coral's Bite, Devious, Divine Spark, Fiendkiller's Flail, Flamecaster's Bolt, Flay, Frostburn's Wrath, Ghostfolly's Gloves, Infiltrator, Lorestealer, Mau-Jehe, Mindsplinter, Planeshifter's Knife, Simple Bow, Sling of the Dire Wind, Staff of the Torrent Moons, Steadfast, Stormchaser's Cudgel, Thanifex (also known as "Spear of the Erstwhile"), Vicious, and Wargird's Armor.

Special thanks go out to Andre "Ziggy" Byrne, a psionic specialist who came up with the concepts for Mau-Jehe and the Simple Bow, Andy Poon, an amazing illustrator who drew and inked all the original weapon art for me, and Richard Stephenson, my best friend and consummate editor of grammar (soon to be an elementary school teacher).

My official list of maps (in order of legacy items) includes Tavern Brawl, Sahuagin Outpost, Blind Corner Ambush, Bounty Hunter Gambit, Tomb of Ankheg Eggs, Ettin Mountain Cave, Fire Warden Lair, Yuan-Ti Snake Farm, Arctic Troll Gorge, Empty House Robbery, Alleyway Assassination (least inspired), Dark Temple, Sanctuary of the Sun, Jousting Match, Terracotta Warriors, Air Steward's Realm, Goblin Ambush, Secret Hideout, Sacrificial Alter, and Winter Wolf Burrow.

Let it be known that all the original maps listed above were drawn during the final day of my deadline. Drawing maps was one of those freelancer responsibilities I didn't know about until *after* accepting the job (not that I'm complaining). Special thanks go out to Chris Ferguson, who helped me brainstorm ideas in the 11th hour.

A "New Look" for Weapons of Legacy
28 May 2005
0

Just when I thought a cover design couldn't look any more slick, I am thoroughly proven wrong. I had heard that the last Weapons of Legacy cover wasn't the final incarnation, but hoped the original artwork wouldn't be completely redesigned. I'm glad to see that my fears were baseless. The new look has been tweaked, but essentially remains the same as the earlier version.

Much as I would like to talk about this book, I am still contractually bound to silence. Suffice it to say, if you are anything like me and can't stand disposable magical items, this book will solve all of your problems and creatively empower you at the same time. I reckon one and one-half months before the official release.

If being translated into another language is flattering, then I'm floored.

Not too long ago, I was electronically approached by José Luiz "Tzimisce" Cardoso

My elven wife was overjoyed to learn that "Barbara" is Portuguese for "female barbarian". Who knew I married a savage? I'm not complaining.

I Slept the Entire Trip to Seattle
17 January 2005
0
Eight weeks, the winter holiday season, new years eve, and my third Wizards of the Coast project is done. Last Friday marked the deadline for my latest freelancing project. I got a chance to work with Gwendolyn Kestrel on this book, a very accommodating boss who answered every one of my questions, no matter how numerous or particular in nature.

I don't mind saying that this project was the most mentally engaging to date. Weapons of Legacy involved a large amount of what I call "cookie-cutter" writing, using the same template over and over again. T
his assignment (a Races of... book) covered a wide spectrum of subjects, all of which I wanted to bind together with their own internal logic.

I'm very happy with the final product, but as always, the editors get final approval over anything I write. We'll see what makes the cut. More details as I'm allowed to disclose them. Here's a silent movie my wife filmed on our approach to head office.

Wizards Announces the Weapons of Legacy
01 December 2004
0

I can't describe my level of excitement. Weapons of Legacy was my trial by fire in meeting the specific standards of a gaming company. It felt like I was writing a university thesis in 11 weeks. The daunting page count, the individualized art orders, the full page map illustrations (which I later realized should have been drawn to scale) were all completed on time. Finishing was satisfying, but now, seeing all that hard work take form—the almost tangible cover—is so immensely gratifying.

I was recently teased about losing my indie cred. I think this opportunity was all about luck. You can read more about Weapons of Legacy either by clicking here or on the cover image.

The word is out, but I am still sworn to secrecy. The Wizard of the Coast book that I worked on as a freelancer, Weapons of Legacy, was recently announced by Amazon.com. Still, beyond the title, I have been asked to keep the details of this hardcover fuzzy ... or else suffer a painful psionic death at the mind of Bruce Cordell, my excellent project boss for that assignment. So until Weapons of Legacy appears on the official Wizards catalogue, I am a paragon of silence (in case that wasn't already apparent). :)

If I Could Be a Whirligig...
18 July 2004

For those of you who make regular visits to this web site, you have probably noticed the lack of updates. There's a reason for it. I've been spinning like a top for the last 2 and 1/2 months. I never like talking about something until its done, but I just finished a 2 and 1/2 section (80 page) commitment for Wizards of the Coast. During this assignment, I had the pleasure of working with none other than mister psionics himself, Bruce Cordell, who was my project boss.

My wife and I drove to the Wizards of the Coast office in Seattle and dropped off my hardcopy two days ago. While we were in town, Bruce and his wife Dee offered their guest room to us for the night. You have never met a more decent couple (not to mention their six cats and one dog). We then all went out for dinner and met up with Christopher Perkins, the man who hired me in the first place and to whom I owe a world of thanks (for giving me the chance to prove my deadline mettle).

All in all, it was a great freelance experience. I can't talk about the book yet, but the job was a real peach. I got to tell stories on an almost daily basis and that's what I love doing. We'll see where the book goes from here.

Check out the new "savage template" which opens up "barbarian-like" cultures to any character class (with abilities to match). This template is also meant to compliment the modified barbarian found in classes section, which has less to do with being "at home in the wild" and more to do with being a "purely berserker warrior".0

To help inaugurate my web site, I am proud to announce all three of my prestige classes, which originally appeared in Dragon Magazine issue #303, found their way into the Complete Warrior; namely the "Invisible Blade", "Occult Slayer", and "Reaping Mauler" (featured below).

The above artwork is excerpted from Dragon Magazine #303 and the Complete Warrior, and is drawn by (from left to right) Wayne Reynolds, Derek Thompson, Derek Thomson (again), Steve Prescott, Joel Thomas, and John and Laura Lakey.

Never mind that my prestige classes were shrunk down from their original 10-level progressions; I consider that the inevitability of getting edited. It's extremely gratifying just to see them published in a Dungeons & Dragons hardcover book.

If anybody is curious about the original 10-level versions of these prestige classes, you can find them in the prestige classes section, now converted to 3.5 edition.

The Waking Lands Goes Public

For the majority of you who haven't visited here before, this web site is dedicated to the game of Dungeons & Dragons, the exploration of those rules through meaningful revisions, and the development of a campaign world known as the Waking Lands. Everybody who loves and plays this game has their own set of house rules. In my case, however, I finally needed a web site to keep track of them all. Enjoy.
