BUGBEARS
  Humanoid (Goblinoid)
Bugbears are formidable opponents in any physical endeavor, with natural power, coordination, and stamina to aid them during combat. Blunt and crude, bugbears are also strategically minded, not to mention more than capable of sneaking up on any opponent (despite their muscular bulk). Add to this host of abilities a highly resilient hide and you can see why bugbear regiments are feared enemies and valued allies. Although usually found leading goblins and hobgoblins into war, an adventuring bugbear is not without precedent and certainly an asset to any party.
Bugbears are shy on abilities but more than ample with bonuses. Their meager level adjustment of +1 is primarily due to scent and natural armor. Bugbears also become more stealthy as they gain Hit Dice, which they do at every class level except for one of them. Finally, the bugbear class culminates with a Strength bonus that represents their physical prime.

BUGBEAR BASE TRAITS

+2 Strength, –2 Charisma.

Medium: As Medium creatures, bugbears have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size.

A bugbear is a humanoid that has the goblinoid subtype.

Bugbear base land speed is 30 feet.

Darkvision: Bugbears can see in the dark up to 60 feet. Darkvision is black and white only, but it is otherwise like normal sight, and bugbears can function just fine with no light at all.

+2 racial bonus on Move Silently checks.

Automatic Languages: Common and Goblin. Bonus Languages: Draconic, Elven, Giant, Gnoll, Orc.

Favored Class: Rogue. A multiclass bugbear's rogue class does not count when determining whether an experience point penalty is taken for multiclassing (see XP for Multiclass Characters, page 60 of the Player's Handbook).

Class Skills
The bugbear's class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Climb (Str), Hide (Dex), Listen (Wis), Move Silently (Dex), Search (Int), and Spot (Wis). See Chapter 4: Skills in the Player's Handbook for skill descriptions.
  Skill Points at 1st Level: (2 + Int modifier) x 4.
Skill Points at Each Additional Hit Dice: 2 + Int modifier.

Class Features
All of the following are class features of the bugbear racial class.
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Bugbears are proficient with all simple weapons, with light armor, and with shields (except tower shields).

Move Silently: At 1st level, a bugbear's racial bonus on Move Silently checks improves to +4.
Ability Score Increases: At 2nd level, a bugbear's Dexterity score increases score by 2 points. At 3rd level, a bugbear's Constitution score increases by 2 points. At 4th level, a bugbear's Strength score increases by 2 points.
A bugbear character increases one ability score by 1 point at every Hit Die total divisible by 4. The player chooses which ability score to improve in this case.
Natural Armor (Ex): At 1st level, a bugbear has a +1 natural armor bonus. At 2nd level, this bonus increases to +2. At 3rd level, this bonus increases to +3.
Feats: A bugbear character gains one feat at 1st level and another at every Hit Die total divisible by 3. These feats are in addition to any bonus feats granted as class features or any other bonus feats.
Scent (Ex): At 2nd level, a bugbear can detect approaching enemies, sniff out hidden foes, and track by sense of smell. Bugbears can identify familiar odors just as humans do familiar sights.
The bugbear can detect opponents within 10 feet by sense of smell. If the opponent is upwind, the range doubles; if downwind, it halves. Strong scents, such as smoke or rotting garbage, can be detected at twice the ranges noted above. Overpowering scents, such as skunk musk or troglodyte stench, can be detected at triple normal range. At 3rd level, the radius of this ability increases to 20 feet. At 4th level, the radius of this ability increases to 30 feet.
When a bugbear detects a scent, the exact location of the source is not revealed—only its presence somewhere within range. Bugbears can take a move action to note the direction of the scent.
Whenever a bugbear comes within 5 feet of the source, the character pinpoints the source's location.
A bugbear with the Track feat can follow tracks by smell, making a Wisdom (or Survival) check to find or follow a track. The typical DC for a fresh trail is 10 (no matter what kind of surface holds the scent). This DC increases or decreases depending on how strong the quarry's odor is, the number of creatures, and the age of the trail. For each hour that the trail is cold, the DC increases by 2. The ability otherwise follows the rules for the Track feat. Bugbears tracking by scent ignore the effects of surface conditions and poor visibility.

BUGBEAR AGE
You can choose or randomly generate your character's age. If you choose it, it must be the at least the minimum age for the character's race and class (see Table: Random Starting Ages). Your character's minimum starting age is the adulthood age of his or her race plus the number of dice indicated in the entry corresponding to the character's race and class on Table: Random Starting Ages.
Alternatively, refer to Table: Random Starting Ages and roll dice to determine how old your character is.

BUGBEAR HEIGHT AND WEIGHT
Choose your character's height and weight from the ranges mentioned in the appropriate race description or from the ranges found on Table: Random Height and Weight.
The dice roll given in the Height Modifier column determines the character’s extra height beyond the base height. That same number multiplied by the dice roll or quantity given in the Weight Modifier column determines the character’s extra weight beyond the base weight.
